University Development

Department  Description

The Office of University Development's primary objective is to secure funding for university identified priorities to advance SF State's academic, research and public service missions.  The Office is responsible for helping to build a culture of philanthropy and support for SF State among alumni, students, parents, foundations, corporations and friends.

Full-Time (1.0)

Work Schedule*

Monday through Friday; 8:00am to 5:00pm.

Anticipated Hiring Range*

$7,917.00 to $8,750.00 per month ($95,000.00 to $105,000.00 annually)

Salary is commensurate with experience.

Position Summary*

Reporting to the Senior Director of CFR, the Director engages with and supports faculty, program directors, deans and other campus leaders to secure funding from foundations and corporations for University programs, projects and initiatives. The Director develops and manages relationships with internal campus partners and with foundations and corporations; supports faculty and campus leaders on proposals, letters of intent/interest, concept papers and reports; researches funding opportunities; collaborates with development colleagues to identify promising projects; and helps manage the CFR pipeline and calendar. The Director is responsible for securing foundation and corporate grants ($25,000 and up). A primary focus of this position will be developing corporate engagement strategies and cultivating new relationships with corporations.

The Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations is part of a three-person Corporate and Foundation Relations (CFR) team that serves the entire campus and supports the overall goals of University Development. 

Position Information

Essential Functions
- Engage with faculty, program directors, deans and other campus leaders to identify programs and projects that align with University priorities and are in need of funding.
- Facilitate, strengthen and expand partnerships with private foundations and corporations to advance the University's goals and priorities.
- Support and coach principal investigators in developing concept papers, letters of intent, proposals, reports and briefings. 
- Utilize available resources, databases and networking to research and develop corporation and foundation prospects. 
- Coordinate with the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) and The University Corporation (UCorp) to ensure the timely and appropriate processing of proposals, letters of intent and reports.
- Organize departmental and cross-campus presentations to clarify and promote the team's services and to provide individual faculty members with development consultation. 
- Collaborate with Development and Advancement leadership and team members on projects and initiatives.
- Bring together faculty, program directors and funding partners to create strategies and innovations that align with the University's shared commitment to teaching, research and educational equity.

Minimum Qualifications*

- Ability to work effectively and build relationships with internal constituents including faculty, University leaders, development officers and key campus partners (e.g., ORSP and UCorp).
- Demonstrated success working with grant seekers from a variety of disciplines.
- Demonstrated, recent experience creating and sustaining successful relationships with private funders, particularly in the Bay Area.
- Significant previous experience developing corporate engagement strategies and securing corporate support.
- Outstanding people and communication skills.
- Proven track record (3 years or more) of developing successful proposals and receiving five-, six- and seven-figure corporate and foundation grants, preferably in an academic setting.
- Working knowledge of best practices in corporate and foundation relations.
- Strong critical thinking, analytical, time management and project management skills.
- Highly organized and able to multi-task and manage multiple and concurrent projects, and to meet deadlines.
- A bachelor's degree is required.


- Must possess a valid driver's license and comply with Defensive Driver's Training Program requirements if a personal vehicle is used to travel on official business. 
- Must complete a background check.
- Some local travel by car or public transportation is required for meetings and events outside of the office.
- Very occasional travel outside of the Bay Area/California for meetings and conferences.
- On rare occasions there may be work on weekends/evenings.
