Position Description

The Toptal Community includes thousands of top engineers, designers, finance experts, project managers, and product managers from 100+ countries around the world and places great emphasis on professional development, mentorship, and social engagement.

As Toptal’s Head of Community, you will lead a high-energy and collaborative team responsible for maximizing the value of being a member of the Toptal Community. You will lead the strategic development and execution of all our global community efforts, including online and in-person events designed to grow and engage the global Toptal Community. You will also create and scale high-impact leadership, professional development, public speaking, and philanthropy programs.

This is a remote position that can be done from anywhere.


You will lead the day-to-day operations of the Community Team and spearhead the continuous development and execution of the Community strategy. You will be responsible for setting team goals, managing a large budget, determining the optimal distribution of team resources, and creating, monitoring, optimizing, and reporting on community growth metrics and KPIs.

You will ensure that brand and quality standards are met for hundreds of in-person events around the world, and you will represent the Community team with our talent network as well as with our core team. You will expand the team’s geographic and strategic focus by interviewing, hiring, and training new members of the Community Team to ensure we have a strong, well rounded, community-focused team.

In the first week you will:

  • Onboard and integrate into Toptal.

  • Understand the fundamentals of Toptal, its community, and what sets us apart.

  • Gain a deep understanding of the roles and priorities of the team and key stakeholders.

In the first month you will:

  • Familiarize yourself with existing community regions, initiatives, and key opportunity areas.

  • Fully understand the role that community plays within a variety of functions at Toptal. Begin to identify a roadmap for how our Community team can continue to support and evolve those functions.

  • Work with the VP of Brand to solidify our Community strategy and evolve our plan for the remainder of 2H 2019.

In the first three months you will:

  • Use a data-driven approach to identify strategic growth opportunities within various regions with an emphasis on growing and engaging the community.

  • Engage with key internal partners to optimize how our Community initiatives align to key business strategies and plans.

In the first six months you will:

  • Collaborate with your team to launch a series of new and innovative engagement initiatives.

  • Identify internal and external partnership opportunities.

  • Know the ins and outs of the Toptal Community and begin to leverage Community wins in all Toptal functions.

In the first year you will:

  • Scale high-impact and innovative engagement initiatives.

  • Be a primary force in driving and shaping new avenues of opportunity for all aspects of the Community function at Toptal.


  • Experience in building and leading community teams is a must, with a strong understanding of events planning and engagement strategy.

  • You must be comfortable with all aspects of global recruitment and engagement, and you must always be an outstanding Toptal ambassador, including frequent communication both with the Toptal Community and with external sponsors.

  • Experience with team-building and scaling operations in a rapidly moving environment.

  • You must understand how to elevate initiatives and ensure all aspects of our work align to a broader brand strategy and guidelines.

  • You must be an excellent leader with an exceptional ability to explain complex concepts clearly while dealing with multiple projects and priorities.

  • A background in the tech industry preferred.

  • While a technical background is not required, you must be excellent at using data and quantitative approaches for decision making.

  • You must be energetic and proactive, with strong interpersonal and public speaking skills.

  • You must be a self-starter with lots of initiative and creativity.

  • You must be a world-class individual contributor to thrive at Toptal. You will not be here just to tell other people what to do.
